5 Essential Oils That Can Help With Fibromyalgia

Our brain can identify up to 10,000 different types of scent. Each scent can produce different responses in our body and activate the production of various hormones and biochemicals which can influence how we feel physically and mentally, or even how we perceive pain. Regular usage of certain essential oils is believed to help to improve fibromyalgia symptoms such as pain, fatigue, stiffness, insomnia and depression.

Here are 5 effective essential oils that can help fibromyalgia…

Helichrysum Essential Oil (Helichrysum italicum)

Helichrysum Essential Oil is steam distilled from the flowers of the plant. It carries a sweet, earthy, green floral aroma. The word helichrysum is named after the golden yellow flowers of the plant, and comes from the Greek words helios meaning sun and chrysos meaning gold. The common name, immortelle, also comes from the flowers, because they are long lasting blossoms that do not wither easily.

This essential oil is helpful in coping with depression, anger and stress related to fibromyalgia. It also relieves muscle pain and helps heal the nerve tissue. Since it is calming, patients can use it to relax, relieve stress and tension and unwind. For best relief, about three drops of this oil should be massaged on the temples and other flex points.

1/8 ounce – $42.00

Clary Sage Essential Oil (Salvia sclarea)

Clary Sage Essential Oil is steam distilled from the leaf and flower of the plant. It has a dry, musky, bittersweet floral scent.

The sweet-smelling perfume of this essential oil gives the user great comfort and enhances his mood. So, it is very good for treating depression due to fibromyalgia. It also brings pain relief and stimulates relaxation. To use this essential oil for fibromyalgia relief, about three to five drops of this oil may be added to one teaspoon of jojoba oil or hazelnut oil and apply on the affected parts.

Chamomile, Roman Essential Oil (Arthemis nobilis or Chamaemelum nobile)

Chamomile Essential Oil is steam distilled from the flowers of the herb. It contains a fresh, rich, sweet, fruity, apple-like aroma.

Sleep difficulties resulting from fibromyalgia are quickly laid to rest when one uses chamomile essential oil. This calming herb promotes deep sleep, reduces anxiety and boosts the immune system because it has inherent properties of relaxation. It induces sleep because it helps to improve Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep.

Lavender Essential Oil (Lavandula angustifolia)

Lavender Essential Oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops of the herb. It carries a sweet, floral, herbaceous aroma.

This oil is generally known to improve sleep, thanks to its delicate perfume and hence can greatly benefit fibromyalgia patients. Infuse a cotton ball with three to five drops of lavender oil and place it inside your pillow case. Alternatively, combine about 15 drops of lavender oil to 1/3 cup white vinegar and one cup of water. Pour it into a spray bottle and mist the room with it. It will help the patient sleep better and also improve high blood pressure too.

1/2 ounce – $12.75

Eucalyptus Essential Oil (Eucalyptus globulus)

Eucalyptus Essential Oil is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of the tree. It carries a fresh, penetrating, woody, camphoraceous scent.

Some symptoms of fibromyalgia like soreness, chronic muscle pain and stiffness are linked to poor blood circulation, causing a build-up of toxins in the muscles that lead to pain and inflammation. Eucalyptus oil counters these symptoms as it is anti-inflammatory and can stimulate blood circulation by widening the blood vessels. The patient gets relief from muscular pain and fatigue. To use this oil, combine about four to five drops of it in one cup of hot water. Soak a compress pad in the liquid and apply it to the affected body parts. Repeat the process after the water cools down.

1/2 ounce – $4.00

Rose Essential Oil Benefits, Skin, Depression, and Hormones

http://draxe.com/rose-essential-oil-benefits-skin-depression-hormones/

The smell of a rose is one of those experiences that can ignite fond memories of young love and backyard gardens.

For many us of, however, roses are more than a pretty smell, they have therapeutic benefits that can help heal many health conditions.

Rose essential oil, which is created through a simple process of steam distillation, has been used to treat health conditions and used in natural beauty treatments for thousands of years.

Research and personal experiences tell us that rose oil can improve acne, balance hormones, relieve anxiety, improve depression, reduce rosacea and naturally increase libido.

Rose Essential Oil Profile

Rose essential oil is made by extracting Rosa damascena and researchers have uncovered that it contains several therapeutic compounds known to promote healing in the body:

  • Citronellol –effective mosquito repellant (also found in citronella).
  • Citral – strong antimicrobial that is necessary for vitamin A synthesis (also found in lemon myrtle and lemon grass).
  • Carvone –effective digestive aid (also found in caraway and dill).
  • Citronellyl Acetate –responsible the pleasant flavor and aroma of roses, which is why it’s used in many skin and beauty products.
  • Eugenol –powerhouse behind clove, the richest antioxidant in the world.
  • Farnesol – natural pesticide (also found in orange blossom, jasmine and ylang-ylang).
  • Methyl Eugenol – local antiseptic and anesthetic (also found in cinnamon and lemon balm).
  • Nerol – sweet-smelling aromatic antibiotic compound (also found in lemon grass and hops).
  • Phenyl Acetaldehyde – another sweet-smelling an aromatic compound (also found in chocolate)
  • Phenyl Geraniol – natural form of geraniol, which is commonly used in perfumes and fruit flavorings.

Top 3 Rose Oil Benefits

1. Rose Oil Improves Depression

A perfect example of how beneficial Rose oil can be is seen in how it affects depression. As our ancestors battled situations where their mental status was dampened, or otherwise impaired, they would have been naturally drawn to the pleasant sights and smells of the flowers that surrounded them. I have never seen a person take a whiff of a powerful rose and not smile and then remark how incredible and uplifting it is.

The journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice recently published a study that set out to prove these types of natural reactions to rose aromatherapy clinically. Taking as their subject group 28 postpartum women, the researchers separated them into two groups: one who would be treated with 15 minute sessions of a 2.5% solution of rose/lavender oil aromatherapy twice a week for 4 weeks, and a control group.

Their results were quite remarkable. Not only was it discovered that the women experienced a significant decrease in postnatal depression scores, they also reported marked improvement in general anxiety disorder!

How to use rose oil for depression: If you’re ever feeling anxious or down in the dumps try putting 5 drops of rose and 5 drops of lavender in a diffuser by your nightstand before bed and hopefully you should wake up renewed and at peace!

2. Rose Oil for Skin Health

There are many qualities of rose essential oil that make it beneficial for skin. The antimicrobial and aromatherapy benefits I discussed above alone are good reason to put a few drops in your DIY lotions and creams.

In 2010, Chinese researchers published a study uncovering that rose oil exhibited one of the strongest bactericidal activities compared to 10 other oils. They also discovered that just after 5 minutes of a 0.25% dilution, Propionibacterium acnes (the bacteria responsible for acne) was completely destroyed!

How to Use Rose Oil for acne: If you suffer from acne, try dabbing one drop of pure rose essential oil on blemishes three times a day. Make sure you use a sterile cotton swab and if the antimicrobial power is too much for you, dilute it slightly with some coconut oil

Another reason to use rose essential oil for skin health is because of its uncanny ability to increase your skin’s permeability!

As German scientists explained in a 2010 article, one of the most intriguing aspects of rose essential oil is that, “For substances applied in rose oil a clear relationship between their lipophilic character, chemical structure, and skin permeation could be confirmed.”

Essentially, what this means is that when rose is added to your beauty and skin products, it opens up your skin to absorb more of the chemicals and nutrients.

Used to your advantage, this can be quite life-changing if you mix your own products and include only the best ingredients. On the other hand, if your products are filled with harmful ingredients and the manufacturer includes Rose oil (as many do), you may be unknowingly exposing yourself to toxic chemicals!

3. Rose Oil for Libido & Hormone Health

Because it acts as an anti-anxiety agent, rose essential oil can greatly help men with sexual dysfunction related to performance anxiety and stress. It has also been reported that it can help balance sex hormones, which can contribute to increased sex drive.

How to use rose oil for libido: Many men and women who are planning a romantic evening will rub two drops of the following essential oils on their neck or diffuse them throughout the home or bedroom:

  • Rose
  • Sandalwood
  • Jasmine
  • Ylang-ylang

Also, these oils can be combined with carrier oils of jojoba, coconut or olive and then give your spouse a therapeutic massage.

The Brain Within its Groove

The Brain Within its Groove: A Novella (Variations on Images from Emily Dickinson’s Poems) [Kindle Edition]
by L. N. Nino

AMAZON SUMMARY

“The Brain, within its Groove, Runs evenly – and true – But let a Splinter swerve (…)”

This line by Emily Dickinson gives the title to this horrid tale about madness, lust, and the dangers of exploring our darkest memories.

An old, agonizing Psychiatrist learns that his only hope of recovering his sanity lies in a patient from his past who suffered from an unusual kind of amnesia. The sinister remembrances he will uncover from this dark past will send him into a nightmarish downward spiral of insanity and fear.

BOOK REVIEW

The Brain Within its Groove by L. N. Nino, is an intriguing horror novella. Author L. N. Nino writes the story of an aging psychoanalyst, who is suffering from nightmares and terrors that leave him, literally, paralyzed.

L. N. Nino writes his novella with only a few characters, but the characters are rich in personality, life, and vigor. The aging psychoanalyst tells the story from his point of view. He is working with a younger psychoanalyst to find a cure for his problems of the mind and why it is causing the paralysis of his body. He discovers that the cure lies deep within the darkness of his own mind.

The journey of the aging psychoanalyst into the worst nightmares and terrors deep within the darkness of his mind, contains many twists and turns. There are volatile moments when the old man thinks he is on the brink of something big, and then there are bouts of depression and doubt. A definite roller-coaster ride. A must read for horror and thriller lovers.

I loved this novella and recommend it to all who love a short read of the horrors of the mind.

‘Weather of the Heart’ by Nora Lourie Percival – A Book Review

1 A Weather of the Heart

Weather of the Heart: A Child’s Journey Out of Revolutionary Russia
by Nora Lourie Percival

AMAZON SUMMARY

All through her long busy life in America, Nora Percival felt impelled to learn about the family she’d left behind in Samara, the city on the Volga where she was born. After glasnost she was finally able to go there and find the places, though not the people, of her youth.

Her search resurrected childhood memories of revolution, civil war, famine and exile, which she felt impelled to share, “to speak for so many others who have silently endured the loss of all they valued.”

In her book the reader will meet the extended family who faced many trials in those chaotic years, and will be moved by their steadfast togetherness through want and woe. The reader will share the love and courage that sustained them and helped them survive hunger and despair, the humor that cheered dreary days and the strength that carried them through affliction and calamity. Readers will cry over their sorrows and enjoy their small triumphs, and they will live again in memory.

BOOK REVIEW

‘Weather of the Heart: A Child’s Journey Out of Revolutionary Russia’, is the first of three memoir’s written by Nora Lourie Percival. Nora paints pictures with her descriptions of her homeland, Samara, Russia and the people and the places there.

Nora, a well-loved child, writes about her first experiences with the Volga River, her large family, and how the ‘Russian Revolution’ affected her and her family. Nora is smart, with an engaging personality, and a perseverance seldom seen in a child. Nora survived a young life of destruction and starvation. She became her mother’s strength when her father left for America. Her mother suffered from bouts of anemia and depression. Nora, and her mother, were finally able to sail to the United States and be reunited with her father, but her mother was ill and didn’t want to stay.

Nora’s life was turned upside down again, when her father sent her and her mother back to England. The trip turned out to be disastrous. Nora’s mother falls ill, at the beginning of the voyage, and is hospitalized at the end of the voyage. Nora was not allowed at the infirmary and was sent to a work house. By the time the news reached her father, the doctor’s said it was too late to save his wife, so he sent for his daughter.

Readers that enjoy history, will love this true tale of the Russian Revolution, in the 1920’s, told through the eyes of a young girl. I highly recommend this book for all readers.

Silver Pages on the Lawn : A Student Love Story of the Depression Years of the 1930s
By: Nora Lourie Percival

AMAZON SUMMARY

A true story of lovers and their star-crossed romance that endures parental disapproval as well as the want of time, money, and privacy. To bridge long separations, they make love by words alone. Their passionate, eloquent letters, poignant and poetic, are the heart of this memoir and bring to life the troubled era in which their story takes place—the lean days of the Great Depression, war clouds over Europe, and the literary renaissance of which these aspiring writers were part, form the heart of their history.

‘Silver Pages on the Lawn’ paints a dramatic picture of the difficult years they lived through and of the steadfast love that survived it all and carried them through to the life they dreamed of.

BOOK REVIEW

I enjoyed Nora Lourie Percival’s memoir of college life in the 1930’s and her account of finding true love that endures many hardships. The couple are forced to keep their love a secret; Nora’s Jewish father does not approve of her relationship with a Gentile. The stress of the couples’ lives, attending college, finding places to meet, and often living miles apart, leave Nora dealing with severe bouts of anemia and Herman, her lover, with severe bouts of depression.

The couple are forced to communicate by writing letters to each other. Herman, who is a poet, writes dramatic and poetic letters. Nora often finds herself having to keep Herman’s spirit up through her letters. Herman has many doubts, but Nora is determined that their love will carry them through the hardships and they would have a life together, once she graduates college.

‘Silver Pages on the Lawn’ is based on the couples’ letters to each other. Nora Lourie Percival writes a poignant story of love and shares her precious letters with the world.

I recommend this book to all readers of history, a good love story, and the one’s who enjoy reading memoirs.
