Common Ailments: Appetite, Anxiety, and Asthma

In aromatherapy, alternative health providers, work with essential oils, and their various properties, to help a patient heal. For instance, to encourage the appetite and prevent anemia or anorexia nervosas, one might suggest nutmeg essential oil.

Nutmeg, (Myristica fragans), is an evergreen tree grown in Grenada, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. The essential oil is steam distilled from the dried kernel, (nut). Nutmeg essential oil is clear with a hint of yellow. It has a spicy warm aroma.

First mentioned in Europe in the fifth century, nutmeg was traded by the Arabs and was important during the Middle Ages for various medicinal purposes.

The properties of Nutmeg Essential Oil are that it is digestive, a stimulant, and a tonic.

As stated above, Nutmeg Essential Oil helps encourage the appetite. Try the following recipe:

Add the following Essential Oils to 1/4 ounce Carrier Oil, (I prefer Jojoba Oil):
6 drops Nutmeg
5 drops Orange
4 drops Cardamon
Swirl gently until all oils are thoroughly mixed. Place 3 to 5 drops of this blend to water in an Aroma Lamp, Diffuser, or Oil Burner. Use this blend in the dining area, for several days, or until the person’s appetite returns to normal.

For help with anxiety, try this recipe:

Add the following Essential Oils to 1/4 ounce Carrier Oil:
6 drops Nutmeg
5 drops Bergamot
4 drops Ylang-Ylang
Swirl gently until all oils are thoroughly mixed. This blend can be used, (3 to 5 drops), added to water in an Aroma Lamp, Diffuser, or Oil Burner. It can also be used in the bath, (8 to 10 drops), and/or worn as a body perfume.

Frankincense Essential Oil is very beneficial for those suffering with asthma. It helps to slow down and deepen breathing. Try this recipe:

Add the following Essential Oils to 1/4 ounce Carrier Oil:
8 drops Frankincense
4 drops Benzoin
3 drops Lavender
Swirl gently until all oils are thoroughly mixed. This blend can be used, (3 to 5 drops), added to water in an Aroma Lamp, Diffuser, or Oil Burner. It can also be used in the bath, (8 to 10 drops), and/or use as a chest and upper back massage.
