Daily Prompt: Everything Changes

Daily Prompt: Everything Changes

Walking down the street, you encounter a folded piece of paper on the sidewalk. You pick it up and read it and immediately, your life has changed. Describe this experience.

I left the library at 1:30 p. m. on a breezy August afternoon. As I walked toward the bank, I noticed a folded piece of paper on the sidewalk. I picked it up, intending to throw it in the trash, but I was compelled to read it first. The closer I got to the trash can, the more that piece of paper talked to me; ‘Read me! Read me!’.
I opened the piece of paper and stared at it blankly for a moment. Finally, my eyes focused and I was overcome by what I had read.
With shaking hands, I bought the latest New York Times. I drove home to find a gated entrance where my driveway, flower gardens, and mailbox used to be. I drove up to the gate and punched the number in my head into the keypad standing on my left. The gates swung open and I continued driving up the driveway, enthralled at the landscaping, flower and herb gardens, and trees on both sides of the driveway. I even saw deer, rabbits, and squirrels playing amongst the trees and gardens.
The driveway continued for close to a mile, passing where my home had stood. It was gone and completely landscaped over. Up ahead of me stood a beautiful three-story home. The driveway circled in front of the home and back out again. There was a driver waiting for me. I got out of the car and stared at the house for awhile, as the driver drove my car to a large garage next to the house.
I noticed the door was open and a doorman was waiting for me to enter. Once inside, I toured my new home. Everything was exactly as I wanted it. I kicked off my shoes and curled up in a soft, comfy chair to read the New York Times. I read about how the book I had sent out to publishers had been picked up and published by a big publishing company. My book had been a #1 Bestseller for three months now. The publisher stated that my second book was ready for publication and would be in book stores on December 1st.
Quickly, I ran down to my office, only to find that I now had a secretary.
“Good afternoon, Ms. Bear,” she greeted me. “You have several messages on your desk, but don’t worry about replying to them until tomorrow. I told everyone that you were out today.”
“Thank you, Margaret” I replied as I headed into my office.
My desk was overflowing with papers, but it was the two boxes sitting in the floor, next to my desk, that caught my attention. I opened the oldest one first. It was full of shiny new books; my first book, ‘Bashful Betsy’. The second box contained my next set of shiny new books; my second book, soon to be published, ‘The Weeping Willow Tree’.
I sat and cried with happiness. I started my computer and found book #3 was well on it’s way to being finished. I sighed and said a silent prayer of thanks. Oh, I almost forgot the note. What did it say? Only one word; BELIEVE!
