Daily Prompt: Say Your Name

Daily Prompt: Say Your Name
by michelle w. on May 28, 2013

Write about your first name: Are you named after someone or something? Are there any stories or associations attached to it? If you had the choice, would you rename yourself?

Debra; plain and dull. I hated my name when I was growing up. My mom was going to name me ‘Charlotte Denise’, which I loved, but her mother asked to name me, so I became Debra, with a plain middle name, too. Most of my family called me ‘Deb’, which was fine, and at school I was ‘Debbie’, which was cute while I was young. My mom still calls me ‘Debbie’, which I do not like anymore. I think it sounds like an airhead; ‘Debbie’. My dad always, and still does today, calls me ‘Sis’.
I never thought to ask my grandmother why she named me ‘Debra’, or maybe I did. I have a vague recollection of Deborah in the bible. I’m not sure if she told me that when I was younger, or if I just related it in my mind. Either way, ‘Deborah’ is much more glamorous than ‘Debra’.
I lost my grandmother in October of 1995. Ever since, her death I have embraced my name and am proud to be called ‘Debra’. Now, if I could just get my mom to embrace ‘Debra’! πŸ™‚

  1. Interesting post & I love this prompt. I’m going to run with it and write a blog post about my own name. Most us us hate our own names. I used to hate the name Charlotte, and in the last year or two I have grown to love it. In fact, it is probably among my top five favorite names. Funny how our taste for names changes just like out taste for fashion or food or anything else. I wonder if you would still love the name Charlotte, if that was your given name?
