Like most of you, I had several ancestors that served in various wars from The Revolutionary War, (as far back as I can trace), to current Wars. The one closest to my heart was my Uncle Roger who served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Uncle Roger, one of my dad’s younger brothers, was 7 years older than me, but we were always close. He doted on me and treated me like I was fun to be with rather than a bother to have to look after.
When he got his first car, he would take me riding around with him and, sometimes, his friends. He treated me like I was just one of his friends and I guess in a way we were friends, but we were so much more. We wrote letters back and forth while he was in Vietnam. He made it out alive, but was never the same. He tried to be his old jolly self, but more often than not, he turned to alcohol to make him jolly.
He talked to me some about his time in Vietnam; Harrowing, to say the least. I still blame the Vietnam War for his early death. Between medications from the VA and the alcohol, his kidneys and liver didn’t stand a chance. He passed in September, 2010 and I’ve never been the same since.
R.I.P. Uncle Roger. I still love you with all my heart!
I give thanks to all who have fought, lost their lives, lost their hopes and dreams, and face eternal depression, just so I could live in a free country.
