Daily Prompt: Personal Space
by michelle w. on May 1, 2013
To what extent is your blog a place for your own self-expression and creativity vs. a site designed to attract readers? How do you balance that? If sticking to certain topics and types of posts meant your readership would triple, would you do it?
For me, it would be 50/50. 50% for my own creativity and self-expression and 50% to attract readers. I am, first and foremost, a writer and must be able to create and express myself. Secondly, I need readers to further my goal as a writer. I have to prove there is a market for my writing.
I would love to triple my readership, but not at the cost of losing my creativity and self-expression.

I’m more about the content and community aspect of blogging. I still haven’t figured my way around my blog yet. I want it to be easier for people to find the content that they are looking for…mine is on an infinite scroll lay out..but other things are more important, writing, creating etc
Readership is important to me because it gives me a platform to bring forth more creative ideas and touch more lives.

I love the idea of daily prompts- am going to check that site out. It is true that you need readers to further your goal of being a writer… so true!

You’ll never be happy trying to live up to other people’s expectations, and once you reach your desired number, a new goal post has to be reached. it’s call the arrival fallacy as described by shawn achor in his TED Talk called The Happy Secret to Better Work. Initially, I was obsessed with the numbers but after a week on here, I gave it up, only allowing for posts that are genuine and honest. I’ve noticed the posts that show “the real me”, such as Demands, Profanities and The Middle Finger:My Internal Struggle to Reduce Road Rage tend to get more traffic, so it’s a win win. and no, i’m not listing that post as a way to advertise, just making the point LOL.
