Amethyst

Today, we are going to talk about the Amethyst. Amethyst, a prized gem for centuries, is included in royal collections all over the world. It is a purple form of quartz. Amethyst got it’s name from the ancient Greek word, amesthustos, meaning sober.

Greek mythology says, Amethyst was a young virgin who became the object of wrath for the Greek God, Dionysus, after he became intoxicated with red wine. Amethyst cried out to Goddess Diana for help. Goddess Diana immediately turned the girl into a white, shimmering stone (quartz). When Dionysus realized what had happened he felt remorse for his actions, his tears dripped into his goblet of red wine. The goblet overturned, and the red wine spilled all over the white rock, saturating it until it became the purple quartz that is now known as Amethyst.

The Greeks believed that drinking from an Amethyst cup or goblet, would keep the drinker sober. It is also said that drinking from an Amethyst cup or goblet would banish sorrow and evil.

Throughout history, Amethyst has been thought to carry many good attributes. Amethyst was thought to control evil thoughts, quicken intelligence, aid the warrior to victory, help the hunter in search of his game, and protect the wearer from contagious diseases. Amethyst was thought to bring forth the highest, purest aspirations of human kind. Chastity, sobriety, and control over one’s thoughts were all attributes contributed to one wearing the Amethyst. Amethyst encourages calm, bravery, and contemplation.
During the Renaissance, Amethyst stood for humility and modesty. Throughout the ages, Amethyst has been a symbol of royalty.

Amethyst is associated with the Crown Chakra, where divine essence and spiritual understanding enters the body.
