Daily Prompt: A Plot of Earth

You’re given a plot of land and have the financial resources to do what you please. What’s the plan?

I would build a self-sustaining farm with a small solar home. My grandparents were all farmers and I remember the days of churning butter, growing vegetables and fruits, and cooking on wood burning stoves. My favorite thing to do was walk barefoot on the freshly plowed dirt. My grandpa would be driving the tractor and I would be walking and playing in the dirt behind him. I loved picking up potatoes when he plowed them up, too. Same principle; I got to walk along behind him in the freshly plowed dirt.
The smell; I loved the earthy aroma, still do. When my husband plows our little garden spot, he will call me to come walk in the freshly plowed dirt. He knows how much I love it! 🙂
It was hard work, but it was worth every minute of it; to be able to cook without preservatives, can and freeze our own produce, shelling beans, shuck the corn, feed the chickens, slop the hogs, milk the cows, and all the other chores of sustainable farming.
They didn’t call it sustainable farming back then, no, they called it survival. We all know that history repeats itself. I think there will come a time when we will need sustainable farming again. I’m trying to remember and learn the ways of sustainable farming and pass it on to my grandchildren. I think it is a much more environmentally friendly way to live even if the necessity does not come.
(Remind me to tell you the story of helping my granny kill a chicken for supper!) 🙂
