Daily Prompt: Teacher’s Pet

Tell us about a teacher who had a real impact on your life, either for the better or the worse. How is your life different today because of him or her?

I had a great High School English Teacher. I can’t remember her name after all these years, but I can picture her vividly with her short red hair, scarves, skirts, and boots. She was young and hip, but strict, quick to praise and quick to criticize.

I had her for ‘Creative Writing’ in tenth grade.  She gave me confidence and submitted some of my poems for publication.  Some were publicized in actual books. I was thrilled!

She was also my journalism teacher in the eleventh and twelfth grades.  Here she pushed me even farther and I was elected Editor of our High School Newspaper in my senior year. Writing was my love, my passion, and a career she encouraged me to continue.

Life had other roads for me to travel and here I am, a grandmother trying desperately to pick up where I left off. Even though I don’t remember her name, she was a great teacher and I will remember her and what she taught me.

that is awesome. My english/creative writing teacher didn’t go above and beyond for us. In fact, when I told her I was being published in a poetry anthology she told me that it was ‘nice’ but being published doesn’t really matter. Gee, thanks for your enthusiasm, lady. lol

  2. That’s awful. I can’t even imagine. Having to create your own confidence is hard without someone, preferable an authority, helping along the way. I’m glad you didn’t let her bring you down and went on above and beyond all by yourself. That takes great confidence.
